From Traditional Classroom to Lobby & Theater: Re-Imagining an Introductory Astronomy Course
ORAL · Invited
Abstract
From the Fall 2021 to the Fall 2022 semester, the format of EKU's introductory astronomy course was significantly revised as part of the EngaGE program. The learning space was changed from a traditional, generic, stadium-seating classroom located in the Science Building to a dedicated space in the upper lobby area of the Hummel Planetarium. The classroom layout was created specifically to encourage more student interactions and discussion, as well as implement a grater number and variety of activities. In addition, the new class space is now adjacent to the main theater of the planetarium, allowing for quick transitions between classroom events and theater presentations. Along with the local storage of lab equipment, these revisions have combined to produce a far more interactive, consistent, and visually engaging experience for students.
