Building a recruitment pipeline for future physics teachers
POSTER
Abstract
To answer the regional and national need for highly qualified physics teachers, the department of physics at California State University San Bernardino has been developing a recruitment pipeline for students interested in a teaching career. This pipeline focuses on providing students with opportunities to learn about teaching and participate in teaching-related activities at all points in their time as physics majors, from their first course in the department through entry into a credential program. One highlight of this effort is the new Tools for Physicist seminar, a required class for all new students that explicitly discusses careers in physics. As students further explore and solidify their interest in teaching, there are a number of resources and programs in which they can participate to give them early experience and provide financial support as they work towards a credential and eventual employment as a teacher. Here we will share the programs and resources that contribute to our pipeline as well as challenges we have negotiated along the way.
