The Secret to Overcoming Counterproductive Use of Generative AI in Classes is [REDACTED]
ORAL
Abstract
Any educator who has taught since Spring 2023 (or at institutions with especially enterprising students, perhaps even Fall 2022) has felt the now-all-too-familiar lurch in the stomach of a student submission that reflects more-than-ideal levels of engagement of generative artificial intelligence and less-than-ideal levels of engagement of genuine human intelligence. In this talk, we will make no claims about, and take no positions on, the implications of this frequently observed behavior on the future of higher education, the workforce, or society writ large. Instead, we will describe a specific and simple strategy for designing untimed and open-internet assessments that takes focus off where it should not be (namely, the ability of Gen AI to solve problems) and restores it to where it ought to be (namely, the ability of Gen Z to solve problems). We will demonstrate this strategy deployed on a range of fluid mechanics problems. The strategy is, in a nutshell, [REDACTED].
