Einstein's Meanders

ORAL

Abstract

Everyone is familiar with the sinuous meandering of rivers. However, few people recognize Einstein's seminal contribution to our understanding of the origin and evolution of a river's winding channel. This talk will review Einstein's treatment of the fluid dynamics of river meanders. Its simplicity and elegance illustrates his belief that ``the whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking.''
