Puzzling Out Online Collaboration
ORAL
Abstract
In my face-to-face courses, I teach in a studio learning environment, where cooperative group learning is at the heart of all of my courses. When we rapidly transitioned to online learning last spring, I quickly found out that the collaborative conversations that naturally arise when the students are working in teams on a shared, experimental set-up were dramatically diminished in online breakout rooms as they were working remotely. Hence, I decided to force the issue by bringing in a reform called a jigsaw activity.
