Scintillation Measurements in a Crystal Xenon Particle Detector

ORAL

Abstract

We present the Crystal Xenon Time Projection Chamber (CXe TPC), a novel particle detector technology that may be used as an upgrade to existing liquid xenon (LXe) TPC dark matter experiments or as a standalone next-generation detector. Crystal Xenon TPCs would see mitigation of a leading background source in WIMP searches: the radioactive decay of radon chain contaminants. To maintain the same strengths as in the liquid phase, a CXe TPC must maintain a high degree of transparency to xenon's VUV scintillation light. We compare the scintillation signal between LXe and CXe in response to a germanium gamma calibration source to test the viability of this new technology at the 10 kg scale.
