Teaching PreCollege Students Quantum Concepts

ORAL

Abstract

The International Year of Quantum highlights the need to integrate quantum concepts into education, making physics more relevant and engaging for all students. Despite being a cornerstone of modern physics, quantum mechanics is largely absent from most precollege curricula. Many educators believe it is either too difficult or inappropriate to teach at the high school level.Since 2022, the Quantum for All project has partnered with university, two-year college (TYC), and high school educators to support the integration of quantum concepts into secondary classrooms across the U.S. The project is based on the premise that quantum topics—such as superposition, entanglement, and wave-particle duality—can be meaningfully introduced by connecting them to foundational STEM concepts like momentum, polarization, wave properties, and forces. To support this effort, the project has provided teachers with instructional resources, content background, and opportunities to practice teaching core quantum ideas. This session will highlight the instructional model used, along with key findings, challenges encountered, and successes achieved.
