Spatial Diffusion of Hydrogen and Deuterium Atoms in Solid Molecular HD films at Temperature Below 1 K

ORAL

Abstract

We present the first experimental study on the quantum spatial diffusion of hydrogen and deuterium atoms in a film of solid molecular HD at temperatures below 1K. The method of electron spin resonance (ESR), at frequency 128 GHz and field 4.6 T was utilized in this experiment. H and D atoms were generated in the film by continuous bombardment with electrons produced from running RF discharge in the sample cell. Analysis of the evolution of the ESR spectra of the hydrogen and deuterium atoms in the sample, provides insight into the spatial diffusion of the two atomic isotopes within the HD film.
