The theological beliefs of theoretical physicists
ORAL
Abstract
Theoretical physics is influenced by philosophy, while philosophy is shaped by theological belief. The relationship between theological belief and physical theory is therefore of both historical and present interest for the theorist. This raises the question: how important is theological belief in the role of the philosophy of physics underlying successful physical theory? A survey of prominent theoretical physicists, who have made historically significant contributions to fields of physics, such as classical mechanics, electromagnetism, relativity, cosmology, and quantum theory, along with their theological and religious beliefs is presented and discussed.
