Transport Investigation of Anomalous Magnetic Signatures in a Mn-Ni-Si Ternary Compound

Abstract

Compounds in the Manganese – Nickel – Silicon system have been reported to have interesting magnetism, including reported antiferromagnetism [1] and ferrimagnetism [2]. We synthesize single crystal samples by Czochralski pulling in an arc furnace under an argon atmosphere. Magnetic susceptibility is measured to characterize magnetism. We measure electric transport as a function of temperature and field and discover anomalous features related to its magnetism. We use thermal conductivity to probe these anomalies and disentangle the effects of charge and heat carriers.
