Beyond the visible: the power of art and science collaborations in communicating nuclear research
ORAL · Invited
Abstract
Science is exploration, but more often than not, what scientists discover is invisible to the naked eye. When art meets science, collaborative partnerships between artists and scientists can transform these invisible phenomena into vivid, multisensory experiences that engage not only the intellect but also the emotions and imagination of the viewer.
In this talk, we will explore several inspiring examples of how nuclear scientists at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) and artists have teamed up to break down the barriers between complex research and public understanding. From interactive installations to thought-provoking performances, these partnerships have opened up new channels for scientific storytelling that resonate with diverse audiences. We will end with a call to action for scientists to seek out opportunities to work with artists in order to share the beauty and relevance of their research in ways that make it not just understandable but felt, experienced, and appreciated.
