Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory Public Engagement & Workforce Development

ORAL

Abstract

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is a leading Department of Energy national laboratory focusing on developing clean energy solutions and advancing scientific knowledge in fusion energy, microelectronics, quantum information science, and sustainability science. In this presentation, we will discuss PPPL's Public Engagement and Workforce Development initiatives that aim to foster bi-directional public engagement and create pathways into the field. PPPL's Science Education programs include community-focused initiatives, teacher professional development, internships, and youth conferences. Current efforts emphasize building STEM identity among marginalized students and promoting inclusive participation in plasma and fusion science. PPPL's role in national collaborations supports these goals by sharing best practices, and leveraging partnerships with diverse stakeholders. PPPL's holistic approach to mentoring, professional development, and equitable partnerships reflects a strategic shift towards impactful and inclusive community engagement. These programs are designed to address barriers to participation and build confidence and STEM identity among participants and engage in mutually beneficial partnerships, ensuring a sustainable and diverse technical workforce for the future.
