Anomalous statistics of active turbulence in living liquid crystals

Abstract
Turbulence represents one of the most typical self-organized systems that continuously motivate the advances of nonequilibrium statistical physics. Although driven by completely different mechanisms, active turbulence (or active chaos) can exhibit similar statistical properties as the classic inertia turbulence, e.g., the energy spectrum and probability distribution of the velocity field. In this talk, I will demonstrate that anomalous statistics of turbulent flow can emerge in living liquid crystals, a passive viscoelastic fluid powered by active swimming bacteria. We develop a simple statistical theory to account for these phenomena, highlighting the interplay between the active and passive degrees of freedom.
