Prospects for near-term quantum advantage with QESEM error mitigation software

Abstract

As we approach utility-scale quantum computations which cannot be verified classically, solutions for cancelling noise with guaranteed accuracy are becoming increasingly important. While unbiased error mitigation scales exponentially with circuit volume, the exponent depends on the mitigation method and hardware fidelities. Leveraging the fidelities of near-term hardware, efficient error mitigation promises to outperform classical simulation methods, thus becoming a critical enabler for quantum advantage. We present QESEM, a Quantum Error Suppression and Error Mitigation software, showcasing its projected capabilities on near-term hardware. We support these projections through demonstrations on various quantum algorithms and platforms, including IBM Heron processors, achieving unprecedented noise mitigation in utility-scale experiments. Finally, we discuss how integrating QESEM with classical supercomputing and with error correction will further accelerate the timeline for quantum advantage.
