Capillary-gravity waves and streaming flows induced by heaving bodies at a free surface

ORAL

Abstract

We use simultaneous surface reconstruction and particle tracking to study the surface waves and streaming flows generated by objects vibrating on the surface of a quiescent bath as a function of the object motion and geometry. Quantitative surface reconstruction is performed using a color-based Schlieren technique, where surface gradient information and tracer particles are distinguished in a single image by segmentation and frequency filtering in HSV color space. We characterize coherent steady streaming flows which emerge as axisymmetry of the wavemaker is broken. Surfaces and flows are compared with theoretical predictions.
