Investigation of the structural and magnetic properties of Yb<sub>2</sub>Ta<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>N<sub>2</sub>

Abstract

A major focus of studies of geometric magnetic frustration in three dimensions has centered on compounds that host a pyrochlore network. While most conventional pyrochlores are oxides, oxynitrides are interesting variants where the anion site hosts both oxygen and nitrogen anions, offering a new platform to control ligand fields and tune the magnetic ground state. The oxynitride pyrochlore Yb2Ta2O5N2 [1] was obtained by the nitridation of YbTaO4 crystals grown using a laser floating zone furnace. Magnetization and heat capacity reveal an absence of conventional magnetic order or freezing down to 100 mK, and the structural and magnetic properties of this compound were studied via a variety of techniques. Our results show that Yb2Ta2O5N2 serves as a candidate to extend our knowledge about the influence of anion disorder on the magnetic ground state in pyrochlore magnets.
