Strain Engineering of Bilayer Nickelates

Abstract
Recent discoveries regarding superconductivity in layered nickelates under pressure have garnered significant attention. A key question is how the structure and electronic properties of nickelates are modified under pressure to enable superconductivity, particularly in bilayer nickelates. In this study, we explore an alternative approach to engineer the structure and electronic properties of bilayer nickelates using strain. By examining a comprehensive series of rare earth for bilayer nickelates, we analyze their structural and electronic characteristics through first-principles calculations under various levels of compressive and tensile strains. We compare the properties of strained Re3Ni2O7 with those modified by pressure and investigate whether strained Re3Ni2O7 could serve as a suitable candidate for high-temperature superconductivity.
