CMS Outer Tracker Phase 2 Upgrade

Upgraded components will be needed to replace the full silicon tracking detector of the CMS in preparation for the HL-LHC project scheduled in the late 2020's. At Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory, two types of modules, 2S and PS, will be assembled to create the new, upgraded outer tracker (OT). Installation of these modules are planned to occur during Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). The OT will now be able to incorporate tracker information into the Level 1 (L1) trigger, permitting sustainable trigger rates, and extend the tracking range in ∣η∣ from 2.5 to 4.0. Design specifications and trigger requirements will be detailed as well as the critical assembly requirements put in place to ensure successful operation.
