Brazil Goes Quantum

ORAL · Invited

Abstract

A strong effort in the area of quantum information has been in place in Brazil. The virtual National Institute for Quantum Information, financed by the federal government and state agencies, involves about 120 Pis and their pos-docs and students, working in 20 higher education institutions and one federal research center. Research groups are present in twelve states of the country, with an important cooperation network, which includes international laboratories. Main themes of research are quantum communications, quantum sensors, and quantum computing, with articles published in high-impact journals and implementation of quantum communication networks. The effort in this field benefits from quantum optics research developed in Brazil, around half a century ago, which helped to forge international cooperation and form many scientists now involved with quantum information and quantum technologies. A new Competence Center for Quantum Technologies, with strong ties with industry, was established in 2023. This talk will present a birds-eye view of the developments in this area in Brazil, and will also point out to research on quantum science and technology in other countries of Latin America.
