Shaping the Future: Brazil's Quantum Leap in Science and Innovation
ORAL · Invited
Abstract
As of 2025, Brazil's GDP stands at $2.3 trillion, making it the 10th largest economy. The economy is driven by services (68%) and industrial goods (26%), with significant agricultural contributions (6%). Despite relatively high investment in research (1.3% of GDP), a lack of cohesive strategy hinders talent retention and innovation. The São Paulo State Research Foundation (FAPESP), funded by 1% of state tax revenue, supports scientific research and launched the Quantum Technologies Initiative (QuTIa) in 2024. This 10-year program aims to position Brazil as a global player in quantum research, addressing societal challenges through innovation. I will outline the steps to establish QuTIa and highlight ongoing efforts to strengthen quantum science in São Paulo and Brazil, leveraging advancements for scientific and societal benefit.
