Refreshing the APS Physicist Profiles

ORAL

Abstract

The American Physical Society (APS) Careers team strives to raise awareness about all career opportunities available to those with a physics degree and provide resources to help students find success in their career journey. It can be challenging for physics students to learn about opportunities outside the academic system in which they spend so much time. This project aims to support the careers team's goals through work on an online resource called Physicist Profiles. The work is three-fold: creating new profiles, updating outdated profiles, and making it easier for users to find specific profiles. All 73 profiles were reviewed and compared to the most up-to-date information available on each respective physicist. This allowed the team to identify the types of careers missing and find additional physicists to highlight. Interviews were then conducted to further examine some of the current physicists' most recent career developments and gather information on four newly identified physicists. The information was synthesized and posted to the Physicist Profiles section on the APS Careers website. Further work was completed on adding tags to each profile to create a filtering feature that the audience can use to find profiles of interest, which will lead to a relevant, useful resource for any student visiting the website.
