Critical Issues in the Physics Pipeline

COFFEE_KLATCH

Abstract

As we will outline, Physics programs are faced with rapidly growing concerns, e.g., the December issue of Physics Today shows concerning trends in the number of Physics bachelor's degrees awarded nationally. This panel aims to delineate critical issues at each stage in the Physics pipeline, which should not be ignored. In what ways can you take action to improve the health of the Physics pipeline? Notably, there really are steps that can be taken to "move the needle" in a positive direction and so programs like yours need to be aware of the kinds of innovations that other programs are developing. Ongoing engagement with our shared professional societies, APS and AAPT, is expected to play a crucial role.

The panel for the AAPT Tuesday evening session entitled "Critical Issues in the Physics Pipeline" will be Laura Greene (FSU), Gabe Spalding (President of AAPT), Beth Cunningham (CEO of AAPT) and Michael Marder (UT Austin). Laura Greene will chair the panel.
