Building trust in the integrity of science

Abstract
Trust in science has been declining in recent years. At the same time, research integrity has become an increasingly prevalent issue, with high-profile cases of fraud undermining trust both within the scientific community and among the public. In this panel session, we will explore the topic of trust in science through the lens of research integrity. Beyond managing the fallout when research misconduct is revealed, what else can be done? Are there steps can we take now to promote a science culture where instances of fraud are minimized? Can the process for correcting and maintaining integrity of the scientific scholarly record be further employed to build trust among scientists and the public?
To explore this topic, we will bring together voices from publishers, research integrity officers, science journalists, and philosophers of science.
We will discuss how common research misconduct really is, its root causes, and its effects on public trust in science. What are the positive, proactive steps scientists and our institutions can take to promote research integrity and to build trust? We aim to include the audience in the discussion with plenty of time reserved for Q&A.
Panelists:
Nathan Ballantyne, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Cognition and Culture, Arizona State University
Lauran Qualkenbush, Senior Director, Research Integrity and Training, Northwestern University
Allegra Torres , Research Ethics and Integrity Manager, AIP Publishing
Lucas Van Wyk Joel, Senior Science Writer, UC Irvine School of Physical Sciences
