Characterization of particle shape using distributed curvature analyses.

ORAL

Abstract

The topic of shape classification has roots across the geo-mechanics and materials communities. Digital imaging has become routine in many particulate-based applications. And while there is extensive literature on particle image analysis, ambiguities remain in both terminology and analytical methods for characterizing particles and granules. As a starting point, this study references the guidance and terminology of the International Standards Organization (ISO 9276-6:2008), and then expands consider more detailed curvature analyses in context of particle shape distributions and statistical descriptions thereof. While it is generally accepted that complex size and shape interactions affect critical aspects of powder processing; for example, shape and contact curvature are fundamental to the mechanics of powder spreading, packing, and sintering in powder-bed additive manufacturing, it remains a challenge to predict ensemble behavior based on distributed characteristics. In this presentation, we apply image analysis methods used to characterize particulate materials (e.g., powder feedstocks used in additive manufacturing) to complex geological particles including volcanic ash. We invite productive discussion at the nexus of materials engineering and geophysics.
