A society publisher perspective on Research Integrity

ORAL · Invited

Abstract

Research Integrity is a topic much in the news of late, with concerns about data fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism appearing as dramtic stories in the media. In part this is due to a prevalent narrative about the role of science in society, about a notion of shared knowledge and a set of facts that we all have in common. Such notions of generally accessible objectivity have come under question, and in an age of social media and emerging controversies about the communication of scientific results, gatekeeping, and conflicting values of transparency and confientiality, attention turns to publication ethics. In this talk I would like to give the perspective of a society publisher from a not-for-profit organization (APS). I will discuss the approach we are taking with regards to publication ethics, research integrity, what tools and approaches we utilize, and how we see the future.
