Oral: Applicability of Clausius-Mossotti Equation for Dielectric Constants in Polarizable Liquid System

ORAL

Abstract

The Clausius-Mossotti equation, otherwise known as the Lorentz-Lorenz equation, established a connection between the macroscopic properties of the material (dielectric constant) with microscopic properties of the material (molecular polarizability) in the 19th century. However the relation ignores correlations between dipole moments in a system. We are thus unsure to what extent the Clausius-Mossotti relation is applicable for high density liquid systems. In this work, we utilize a molecular dynamics simulation of a Stockmayer fluid with a Drude polarizer to examine the validity of the Clausius-Mossotti relationship across various physical conditions and molecular arrangements. We quantify the deviation in dielectric constant between the Clausius-Mossotti equation and what we observe via molecular dynamics simulations in fluid systems.
