Phantom of the Universe -- A Highly Successfel Planetarium Show on Dark Matter Presented Worldwide
ORAL
Abstract
Dark Matter is one of the great mysteries of current physics. Three physicists assembled a distinguished team to create an educational planetarium show about Dark Matter. The show, called Phantom of the Universe, covers dark matter from the Big Bang to galaxies to a deep underground experiment to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The team included Academy Award-winning actor Tilda Swinton and an Academy Award-winning team at Skywalker Sound. Our target audiences are students and the public. For most planetariums, school visits account for about half their audiences. We found that many planetariums had a great interest in a dark matter show. They present our show for months or even years. Planetariums have the perfect science-interested audience for us in the general public and K-12 students. Our planetarium show has been seen worldwide by over two million people. It has been in more than 850 planetariums in 77 countries and in 28 languages.
