A Lesson Study for Inclusion in Postsecondary Physics

ORAL

Abstract

Lesson Studies are a framework commonly used in k-12 mathematics that aim to improve learning in the classroom. The Transformative Inclusion in Postsecondary STEM (TIPS): Towards Justice program is an NSF-funded program at Sonoma State University, which aims to address persistent marginalization and underrepresentation of Latine students in STEM. In this talk, I will discuss how our Physics department utilized the Lesson Study framework in our own classrooms as a part of our work with the TIPS program. Specifically, we focused on rehuminizing our introductory physics labs by illuminating how our bodies already contain knowledge about physics and increasing the students' roles as scientists in the lab. These interventions primarily focused on increasing participation of our Latine students, but had the added benefit of uplifting all students.
