Analysing dark matter in classrooms: Leveraging Augmented Reality and Chat GPT in Astrophysics Education

Abstract
We will show a learning module combining AR and LLM-based interaction through which students learn about contemporary dark matter research studies. Students act as astrophysicists and particle physicists who use the AMS experiment (ISS) and the ALICE particle detector. Since the facilities are beyond the learners' reach, Lego models are used and supplemented with AR visualisations. This interaction fosters learning of conceptual knowledge in an illustrative way. ChatGPT acts as a virtual interactive tutor, using its AI capabilities to enhance learning experiences with individualised learning support. This fusion of AR and AI opens new avenues for creating immersive educational content, enriching the teaching, and learning of challenging subjects.
The advantages of integrating real and virtual representations in AR and the possibilities that arise from integrating ChatGPT into the application will be discussed exemplarily. Further, the learning materials and insights from the pilot studies will be presented.
