Electroproduced Prompt A′ Displaced Vertex Search Techniques with the Heavy Photon Search Experiment
ORAL
Abstract
One of the popular theories for light (sub-GeV) Dark Matter predicts the existence of a Hidden Sector that is uncharged
under the Standard Model (SM) forces, yet able to couple to the SM through new force carriers. A theoretically
well-motivated minimal extension to the SM introduces a light U(1) gauge boson, referred to as the heavy (or dark) photon
A’ that kinetically mixes with the SM photon. This opens a production channel for dark photons analogous to bremsstrahlung
in which an electron radiates off an A’.
The Heavy Photon Search (HPS) experiment at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLAB, USA) is designed to
investigate the visible decay to e+ e– of such electro-produced heavy photons. In particular, HPS is sensitive to detecting
heavy photons which may decay at a point displaced from the production target. This presentation will highlight the unique experimental setup of HPS and illustrate the procedure
of the displaced vertex analysis.
