Development of an MVA-Based High Level Trigger for H->γγ Decay at CMS

ORAL

Abstract

At the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS), the High Level Trigger (HLT) is a crucial step in data taking. The goal of the HLT is to maximize signal efficiency for processes of interest while keeping the total saved data rate within acceptable parameters. As studies of the Higgs Boson proceed, the focus on even rarer processes has increased. High signal efficiency is vital to studying very rare processes. In this talk, we will discuss the creation of a Boosted Decision Tree (BDT) machine learning algorithm to improve upon the current HLT for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons (H->γγ). This process has historically been a very important channel for the Higgs and is expected to be an important channel for the analysis of the di-Higgs (HH) production and decay. We will present the measured increase of efficiency for a simple H->gg process and directly compare this improvement to the current HLT.
