Effective Field Theory Approach to Tidal Disruptions of Main-sequence Stars: The Role of Dynamical Tides
ORAL
Abstract
Tidal disruption events (TDEs), where a star is torn apart by the gravitational field of a supermassive black hole, provide a great opportunity to study the tidal effects in both fully dynamical and strong gravity regime. However, due to the large separation of length scales, the current phenomenological TDE models are sometimes oversimplified. In this talk, I will present how effective field theory (EFT) techniques can be used to study strong tidal encounters and build more physical semi-analytic TDE models, incorporating both relativistic effects, stellar rotations and dynamical tidal effects. Then, I will apply the EFT framework to polytropic stars and realistic main-sequence stars. Finally, I will discuss some implications about the full TDE rates.
