Inclusion Initiatives in Gamma-Ray Collaborations
ORAL · Invited
Abstract
The gamma-ray community is united around large collaborations for each mission and facility. Over the past few years, we have begun to increase our awareness of challenges and solutions in diversity and inclusion at the level of international collaborations. FermiLAT established the DEI organization, which hosts panels of DEI experts and community representatives to discuss important timey DEI topics, like Hidden Curriculum and Scientists' Responsibility for DEI Work. A separate working group administers the Fermi Mentoring Program to provide students with career advice and networking within the collaboration, but outside their research topic. The COSI Collaboration's DEI Working Group reviews collaboration policy documents and has conducted a climate survey that lead to the creation of a near peer mentoring program, based on the success of the Fermi Mentoring Program. SWGO is building on the legacy of HAWC in building local outreach into their program from the proposal phase. HAWC has also conducted a climate survey. As awareness has grown, so has the role of these advisory groups.
