Remembering Tsung Dao Lee and his contributions to physics

ORAL · Invited

Abstract

Over an active career of 60 years Prof. Lee made remarkable theoretical contributions to physics in a broad spectrum of areas. While high energy particle physics was most often his focus, he is also credited with important advances in statistical mechanics, condensed matter physics and astrophysics. As Prof. Lee's student and colleague for most of my career, I will describe some of those contributions and the excitement and pleasure of collaboration with him. Prof. Lee's contributions went beyond ground-breaking theoretical ideas and calculations. They extended to establishing new directions for the entire field and creating carefully designed institutional structures which dramatically enhanced the careers of numerous physicists, including my own.
