Finite Element Approaches for Adiabatic Shear Band Modelling

Abstract

Simulations have been performed to investigate the best approaches to finite element modelling of adiabatic shear banding in 3D hydrocodes. Ti6Al4V alloy, which is widely used in industry, is highly susceptible to failure due to the adiabatic shear banding mechanism, and band formation in this material is assessed for the Thick-Walled Cylinder collapse experimental configuration. A Lagrangian Perturbation field is applied to the yield strength of the target to mimic the effect of material heterogeneities. UK Ministry of Defence © Crown owned copyright 2023/AWE.
