Shock response of tantalum-tungsten alloys

ORAL

Abstract

The dynamic response of body-centred cubic materials is extensively controlled by microstructural factors such as impurities, alloying content and crystallographic texture. In this investigation the effect of tungsten alloying additions to tantalum at 2.5 and 10 weight percent are examined through a series of plate impact experiments. These are described with particular emphasis on the dynamic tensile (spall) strength and the elastic limit. The effect on the elastic limit of a low temperature heat treatment on cold rolled tantalum and tantalum 2.5% tungsten are also discussed. UK Ministry of Defence © Crown Owned Copyright 2023/AWE.
