Photonic Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) Theory and Practice

ORAL

Abstract

This course will cover Photonic Doppler Velocimetry (PDV), a fiber-based diagnostic for tracking motion in real time. After a high-level overview, the course will delve into the telecommunication technologies behind PDV. Fundamentals of interferometry and practical details of PDV are presented, emphasizing frequency-shifted measurements. A significant portion of the course is reserved for discussion of PDV analysis and uncertainty estimation, with live demonstration of the SIRHEN program.

Students will be given a workbook for the course that includes the lecture notes as well as a library of reference materials. MATLAB programs for synthesizing and analyzing PDV signals are available through the open-source SMASH toolbox.

This introductory course is aimed at students new to optical diagnostics as well as those wanting to learn more about PDV system design/analysis.
