New Equation of State for Iridium

Abstract

We describe the construction of a new tabular equation of state for solid (fcc) and liquid iridium, Sesame 93550. The EOS is calibrated to previous STAR gun data, new first principles calculations, and new measurements of the principal Hugoniot from plate impact experiments using magnetically-launched flyers on the Z machine at Sandia. The calculations are used to define the thermal response of both phases and the location of the critical point, and the new Z data constrain the shock locus up to 7 Mbar. The full suite of experimental and computational results is incorporated through particle swarm optimization.
