Comparison of Equation-of-State Models for Simulation of Under-Water Wire Explosion

POSTER

Abstract

We have carried out one-dimensional simulations of under-water wire explosion(UWWE) to investigate the impact of equation of state(EOS) models that are typically used in studies of high energy density plasma. It is important to use proper EOS model in hydrodynamic(HD) code as UWWE wire undergoes a wide range of EOS and electrical conductivity regime during its explosion. The hydrodynamic behaviors and physical property changes of a single metal wire that is electrically discharged in the water are simulated and compared with experimental measurements to show the validity of EOS models. EOS models are based on the Thomas-Fermi (TF) theory, related ionization fitting formulae, ideal-gas EOS and their combinations. Future applications of the EOS model coupled with HD code include modeling and simulations of X-pinch experiments.
