Equation-of-State measurements for low-density carbonized resorcinol-formaldehyde aerogels

Abstract

Aerogels are often used in laser driven and gas-gun shock physics experiments. Recently, carbonized resorcinol-formaldehyde (cRF) aerogels were implemented in a series of tantalum shock release experiments at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The experiments span a pressure range of ~15 to 40 GPa and require an equation-of-state (EOS) for CRF. The EOS of CRF aerogels with densities ranging from 0.2-0.8 g/cc was measured and is presented here.
