High Pressure Phase Response of 17-4 Stainless Steel
POSTER
Abstract
Like many martensitic Fe-based alloys, 17-4 stainless steel undergoes a high pressure phase transition. In this work, we present a synergistic study using both dynamic and static higher pressure experiments to study the phase transition in 17-4 stainless steel. In-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements at high-pressures were obtained using both plate-impact experiments at the Dynamic Compression Sector (DCS) and a diamond anvil cell (DAC) at the High Pressure Collaborative Access Team (HPCAT) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). The results show that the transition is from a body-centered-tetragonal (BCT) structure with minimal elongation to a hexagonal close packed structure (HCP).
