Abstract

The discovery of a non-zero neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) would provide evidence of violation of a fundamental symmetry of nature known as charge parity (CP) conjugation. CP violation is needed to explain the observed preeminence of matter over antimatter in the universe, despite both being generated in equal quantities during the initial phase of the Big Bang. The nEDM@SNS experiment, under development at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, seeks to address this mystery by using breakthrough technologies to make the world’s best measurement of the neutron’s electric dipole moment, improving current precision by two orders of magnitude. In this talk, I will provide the physics motivation, design, and current status of the nEDM@SNS experiment.
