Abstract

Measuring the lifetime of the metastable state in ruby (Al2O3:Cr) is a straightforward, well-known undergraduate experiment. We present results of an experiment to measure a giant two-photon absorption process in ruby that is similarly accessible at the undergraduate level. We can also report similar studies on alexandrite (BeAl2O4:Cr) and emerald (Be3Al2(SiO3)6:Cr).
