Looking for Physics Beyond the Standard Model: First Results and Current Status of the Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermilab
ORAL · Invited
Abstract
In the search for physics beyond the Standard Model, the Muon g − 2 Experiment at Fermilab (E989) has made the most precise measurement of the anomalous magneitc moment of the muon aμ. When combined with previous experimental results, there is a 4.2σ discrepancy with the Muon g − 2 Theory Initiative Standard Model prediction. The muon aμ is extracted from the measurement of the precession frequency of spin-polarized muons stored in a highly uniform, precisely mapped magnetic field. This talk will present the measurement and systematic errors associated with the first result from the 2018 data and will discuss the subsequent runs and continued improvements in the extraction of aμ.
