Introduction of Air Gaps to Vary Shock Input into Modified Wedge Test for Explosive Characterization

Abstract
Experiments utilizing a modified wedge and gap test configuration with small-scale plane wave drivers were developed as a promising method for characterizing novel explosive formulations. The challenges associated with traditional wedge testing methods, including logistical limitations and the prohibitive costs of gas gun use, have underscored the necessity for a more adaptable approach. Our study employs legacy small-scale plane wave drivers, enabling a highly iterative testing configuration that effectively captures the unique characteristics of these formulations. The test configuration also allows for streamlined introduction of alternative attenuation systems, employed here through the introduction of various air gaps to simulate environmental conditions. We present initial results demonstrating the efficacy of this setup in measuring shock response and detonation behavior in a polymer bonded explosive system. These findings pave the way for enhanced understanding and development of advanced explosive materials.
