Equation of State and Refractive Index of Ramp Compressed Sapphire
ORAL
Abstract
Sapphire is a high-impedance window material in shock compression experiments due to its transparency to optical lights over a substantial range of shock pressures [1]. It has yet to find applications as window material in ramp compression experiments, where the temperature is much lower than in shock compression experiments, due to a lack of accurate knowledge of the equation of state (EOS) and optical refractive index under ramp compression [2]. In this work, we present a measurement of these two properties up to 350 GPa from a ramp compression experiment using the OMEGA-EP laser system, enabling the application of sapphire as window material in future ramp compression experiments.
