Workshop: State advocacy for HS physics teacher preparation

ORAL

Abstract

Passed in December 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) allocates new resources to STEM teacher education, including a provision for greater flexibility in spending Title II funds on teacher preparation. Further, ESSA delegates more authority to states for deciding how to use these funds. This workshop will identify and discuss strategies for advocacy at the state level to improve teacher education policy and support physics teacher preparation programs. It will also involve learning the best ways that one should communicate with policymakers, which also translates to communicating with university administrators. It will be led by the APS Washington office, which supports members in advocating for national and state policies regarding physics and physics education.
