Setting up teaching experiences in teacher deserts

ORAL · Invited

Abstract

“We’ve successfully recruited N physics teacher education candidates, GREAT! Now, where do we place them for their field and student teaching experiences?”

Physics departments have increasingly been accepting the responsibilities of supporting (and leading) their institution's physics teacher preparation programs. In response, efforts and organizations such as PhysTEC, Get the Facts Out (GFO), APS and AAPT have become instrumental for recruitment, program enhancement, growth, student retention, scholarships, programmatic support, and more. In this session, we will engage in open discussion exploring resources, strategies, and the sharing of ideas/experiences to address a “worst, best-case scenario” of sorts: A population of physics teacher candidates in areas that are essentially K-12 physics deserts.
