From Surviving to Striving in Academia

ORAL

Abstract

This workshop focuses on on surviving and thriving as an underrepresented student in academia, with a focus on experiences in STEM fields. There will be a review of researched phenomena that students experience such as racial battle fatigue, stereotype threat, microgaressions, and imposter syndrome. The workshop will include discussions and activities around these topics amongst attendees and with the two facilitators who will highlight their experiences as women of color in STEM. The goal of this session is to have conversations about the unnamed hurdles that students may experience in academia and brainstorm ways to tackle them. We want students to leave with a firm belief that they belong in the field and are armed with strategies to cope with any difficulties that may come up along the way.~
