Performing Research: An Essential to Enhance Undergraduate Education

Abstract
For undergraduate students, especially from underrepresented populations, engaging in research experiences has been shown to enhance the educational experience; and sometimes becomes the difference between obtaining their degree or not. However, many challenges still exist relative to building a community among students navigating large institutions; and adapting in order to balance research with course work. This workshop aims to assist students beginning undergraduate research achieve this balance and thrive in their research group. Learning objectives include finding a mentor, understanding their place in a research community, linking their research to their course work, managing time, and contributing to a broader scientific community.
